Welcome:

About this Website

Tiger Chess was founded by Nigel Davies in 1994, starting out life as Checkerwise. After gaining the Grandmaster title Nigel started to see chess as a profound means of personal development and for players of any age or level. Despite having been the mentor of two future Grandmasters (Matthew Saddler and Ronen Har-Zvi) he decided to work more with adults who haven't been able to devote much time to chess.

Over the next few years Nigel pioneered some unique chess services such as a Game Assessment plus a course which was later published in cut down form as The Power Chess Program.

This website is Nigel's latest project.

A Full Contact Mind Sport

Nigel likes to describe chess as a full contact mind sport, this ancient game goes beyond fostering intellectual traits such as logic, pattern recognition and planning ability. By drawing a player into a world which presents a mixture of danger and opportunity, chess cultivates the mindset of a warrior in a way that few other pursuits can.

Nigel maintains that trading financial markets is the only other one in which he has had direct experience but this tends to be more expensive than chess, especially for beginners! Yet there is much common ground between the two and several traders have found Nigel's lessons and writings beneficial. Especially with regards to exposure and risk control.

What You Can Achieve

By investing themselves in the process of chess improvement, people achieve far more than external benefits such as winning, a higher grade or a sense of achievement. Dedication to this mental art form changes the way people think, for example it has been well documented that chess players are proficient at falsifying their own ideas. Other benefits include the prevention of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's whilst at the other end of the age range chess can build character and values in the young.

A major benefit that many of Nigel's students have experienced has been an improvement in their general health through eating and sleeping better and taking more exercise. Chess tends to foster this as to bring out your best you need to be in good shape.
